Today was an incredible day for the community of Pottsboro. Although there is inclement weather outside, inside the hearts and lives of God's people there is warmth and a brightness that is truly supernatural. Just a few hours ago different churches in Pottsboro came together to love on our community in a very tangible way.
We gathered together at Brookshire's and purchased food for our local food pantries. There were two trailers parked in front of Brookshire's for the two charity organizations that are sponsored for this event: Visions of Sugarplums and the Resale Barn.
Visions of Sugarplums is a non-profit organization that provides breakfast and lunch during extended school breaks and on weekends to students who qualify for the free or reduced-cost meal program in the Pottsboro ISD. For Christmas 2013, about 140 children and teens in the Pottsboro ISD received assistance. During the Fall of 2013, Visions of Sugarplums provided approximately 75 backpack snacks each weekend.
The Resale Barn sells donated retail goods, such as clothing, furniture, and electronics, at a discounted price and then helps area residents in need with everything from medical and utility bills to food. In 2013, the Resale Barn supported families in Grayson County with over $300,000 in financial aid.
On a day when there will be incredible amounts of food eaten across the United States for Super Bowl parties, we understand that there is hunger in the homes of many right here in our community. So, before most of us enjoy the blessings of more than enough in our own homes, we wanted to also make sure there is food for the less fortunate.
The We Gather Together initiative will be continuing this week until next Sunday when the trailers will again be parked in front of Brookshire's. If you would like to contribute to We Gather Together you can contact the church this week or simply come by Brookshire's from 12:00-1:00 p.m. Sunday, February 9.
